3 hard truths about social media marketing

Social media marketing is NOT easy.

I've been doing it for well over a decade, and I've learned a lot by trial & error… and some lessons have been harder to swallow than others.

Now, my goal is to share those lessons with you so you don't have to learn the hard way like I did!

1. No one cares about your content.

Ok, maybe your mom cares.

But seriously, on social media you cannot simply assume that everyone automatically gives a F about what you have to say — you have to give folks a *reason* to care by providing a unique value, whether that be information, inspiration, or entertainment.

Avoid creating self-serving content by thinking of your audience as the main character, not you. What do they care about?

2. It's impossible to master the algorithm.

Yes, there are definitely strategies & tricks to boost your standing in the algorithm that users have discovered through experimentation & observation (and I love sharing some of them with you!).

But unless you work at Meta, you can really only *guess* how the algorithm works — AND it’s constantly changing, which makes it even harder to pin down.

So don’t waste time trying to crack the code because it's a losing game. Instead, focus on creating quality content for your audience and analyzing your metrics to find what performs best for you.

3. Social media will not make or break your business.

Social media is an incredible tool to establish your brand & expertise and to build valuable relationships with your clients.

But for MOST businesses, social media is likely not the #1 thing that’s going to determine your business success. Though I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, plenty of businesses are successful without a social media presence at all! It's not a magic pill.

At the end of the day your branding, services, and client relationships are most important for a successful business. And as far as marketing goes, make sure you explore other avenues beyond social media — especially email marketing!
