How to Make Your Brand Feel Like You (Without an AI Prompt!)

We’ve all probably done it at least once. You typed "give me brand colors for a career coach" into chatGPT and got back something that looked perfectly reasonable… but also suspiciously similar to the three other coaches' websites you looked at last week.

That sameness isn't really the tool's fault. When the question is "what does a brand like mine usually look like?", you get the average of every brand in your industry.

If you want to build an authentic brand identity, the answers have to start with you.

An authentic brand identity starts with you

Many of us do this backwards: we pick colors, grab a template, and write copy that sounds like what we assume a business like ours is supposed to sound like. Then we wonder why it feels off, and why there's a little flinch before we send someone the link (“why doesn’t this feel like me?”).

Design is how a brand gets expressed. To figure out how to make your brand feel authentic to who you are, you have to figure out who the brand is first — before design.

So get clear on these four things before you dive into design:

  1. Your values. Not just "integrity" and "excellence." I mean the specific things you won't compromise on. What would make you turn down a client? What do you want to achieve through your work?

  2. Your expertise. What you actually know and do better than most, including the unglamorous stuff clients keep thanking you for.

  3. Your personality. How you really talk to people. Funny? Direct? Gentle? Curious? Encouraging? Sarcastic? Would your friend read your homepage and say "oh yeah, that sounds like you"?

  4. Your perspective. What do you believe about your field that others might push back on? That's where the interesting stuff about you lives, and it’s what makes you most memorable.

Use AI and templates as tools, not as the decision-maker

I'm not anti-tool — brainstorm twenty taglines with AI if it helps. Use a template if it gets you moving. Have Claude help you organize your messy marketing plan. Running a business is hard, and you gotta do what you gotta do to get you where you need to be!

But notice the moment where you stop asking "which of these feels like me?" and start asking "which of these is correct?" That's the moment your authenticity has left your brand… because you’ve left behind what you know in favor of a formula someone else created.

I see so many smart, talented founders looking outside themselves for answers about what their brand should say or look like, when so much of what they need is already there. Sometimes you just need the right questions, a little structure, and permission to trust your own instincts.

Three questions to ask yourself first

Grab a notebook (or a voice memo, if talking it out is easier) and answer these before you start thinking about colors and fonts and website content:

  • Who is this for, and who is it not for? Figure out exactly who you’re talking to.

  • How do I want someone to feel after five minutes on my site? Safe, energized, understood, empowered? Design expresses what you can’t with words, and you want your design to reflect the experience your people to have with you. What colors and fonts and general aesthetic reflects that experience?

  • What would I say if I weren't worried about sounding professional? Start there, then edit down. It's easier than starting from stiff and trying to loosen up. Inject your personality everywhere!

Let the feeling lead the visuals

Once the words are clear, the visual choices get easier. Instead of asking what colors are trending for your industry, try asking: if my brand were a place, what would it feel like? Look like? Sound like?

Is it a sunlit kitchen? A quiet library? A loud, happy dinner party? That answer will tell you more about your color palette and typography than any "best practices" list.

What to do next

If you'd like a guided way to do it, Authentic by Design is my signature hands-on workshop about authentic brand strategy. We start with strategy (your values, expertise, personality, and perspective), then do a guided visualization to explore how that turns into a visual experience. You can find details and register for the live workshop (or sign up for the recording) at cultivation.studio/authentic-by-design.

Prefer 1:1 help? That's what the Brand Foundation Intensive is for.
